Summary[edit]

Description

Jens Jensen House in the Ouilmette North Historic District (c. 1921). It was the residence of famed landscape architect Jens Jensen from its construction until 1935, when he founded the Clearing School of Art. Jensen was born near Dybbol, Slesvig, Denmark in 1860. He worked on his family's farm for 19 years, where he learned to appreciate nature. He was conscripted by the Prussian army in 1881, during which he sketched parks. Wishing to escape the Prussian state, Jensen and his wife immigrated to the United States in 1884. He found work in Florida and Iowa before moving to Chicago to work for the West Park Commission. His skill was immediately noticed, and he was quickly promoted. In 1895, he was appointed superintendent of Humboldt Park, a 200 acre park in Chicago. By 1905, he was general superintendent of the West Park System, and was able to influence the design for several Chicago parks, including Lincoln Park and Douglas Park. His crowning achievement would be Columbus Park on the West Side, now recognized as a national landmark. He moved to Wilmette in 1920 to start his own landscape architecture practice. During this period, he worked and lived out of his Summer Home and Studio in Highland Park. Although he dabbled in architecture, Jensen designed neither the home nor grounds of the property.
