Description |
The Jesuit Church of St. Francis Xavier in Lucerne is one of the most important baroque buildings in Switzerland. It was the first large baroque building to be constructed between 1666 and 1677. Today it is assumed that several architects and master builders were involved in the construction. This is indicated in particular by the fact that both German-speaking and Italian craftsmen were employed on the building site. In addition to an Italian architect (probably Tommaso Comacio) and a master builder from the Voralberg (either Michael Beer or Michel Kuen), a member of the Jesuit College was also responsible for the construction: the Jesuit priest Christoph Vogler seems to have been in charge of the construction until he left Lucerne in 1669. He was succeeded by Heinrich Meyer, a Jesuit brother with building experience. Meyer was largely responsible for the interior design of the church. For example, he made all the stucco decorations.

Object history | Because several parts of the heavy baroque ornamentation fell off, it was decided in 1749/50 to redesign the vault of the main room and the lateral parts with rococo stucco. Because individual areas of plaster began to peel over time, the entire interior was repaired and cleaned in 2016. In addition, all technical installations were renewed. | |||
