Description
Deutsch: Die evangelische Johanniskirche ist die älteste Kirche der Stadt Mainz. Sie war vermutlich auch die erste Bischofskirche der Stadt. Der spätkarolingische Bau wurde unter Erzbischof Hatto (891 – 913) als dreischiffige Basilika errichtet. Von diesem Bau sind die Seitenmauern und Pfeiler sowie die Fenster des Mittelschiffs weitgehend erhalten. Bis 1767 war die Kirche mit dem Mainzer Dom verbunden. 1828/30 wurde die Johanniskirche die erste evangelische Kirche der Stadt.
