TEXAS STATE HISTORICAL SURVEY COMMITTEE P. 0. Box 390 8 Odessa, Texas April 1, 1963 Mr. James B. Myers, Superintendent Gettysburg National Military Park Gettysburg, Pennsylvania Re Texas Memorial Marker Dear Mr. Myers: Please ref er to the letter of Mr. George Hill our Executive Director. For the past 50 years citizens of Texas have discussed placing a marker at some of the places out of state in which our Confederate soldiers acquitted themselves so favorably, and it was only last week that we were able to find some money to do this job; however, we have to complete it before September 1 or the appropriation will elapse. We are, therefore, required to pull all stops because we have to include the inscription in our advertisement for bids--this will take about 60 days. We must have your permission before we advertise, and I assure that you will want to look at the inscription. We do have some leeway, however, in that the exact location of the marker does not have to be given at this time where it is in a national park. The fact that we have permission to place it 1here will suffice for our present purpose. We also have some more time on contacting any monument firms in that vicinity mentioned by Mr. Hill. For these reasons any help that you could give- us in expediting this matter would be deeply appreciated. Sincerely, (signed) John Ben Shepperd President
