Summary[edit]

Description
English: Portrait of John Delaney (1815–1887), a stonemason whose company built the Holyoke Canal System, as well as most of the city's 19th century infrastructure. His son, James E. Delaney would serve as mayor in 1884, 1885, and 1888. Shortly before his death he constructed what has been claimed by contemporary literature to be the first marble building in Massachusetts. Delaney's Marble Block, as it was commonly called, was designed by Holyoke architect James A. Clough and was a mixed use building across from Holyoke City Hall, it was demolished for a more modern storefront for Grant's Dept. Store in 1950.
