Title: John G. Riley House Museum: Tallahassee, Florida

Date: 1999

General note: John Gilmore Riley was born a slave in 1857. After the Civil War, Riley received formal education and began teaching in Wakulla County in 1877. In 1892, he became principal of the Lincoln Academy until his retirement in 1926. This home was built by Riley for his family in 1890 on the edge of the Smokey Hollow neighborhood, an African-American residential area in Tallahassee. Through the hard work and dedication of many individuals and organizations, the property was restored and is now the John G. Riley House Museum.
