José Vieira Alvernaz (5-2-1898/13-3-1986) nasceu na ilha do Pico, estudou no liceu de Angra e no Seminário Episcopal, formou-se na Universidade Gregoriana em Roma e no Instituto de Ciências Sociais de Bergamo. Foi fundador do Colégio Sena Freitas em Ponta Delgada, pároco em Santa Luzia e na Praia da Vitória, professor e mais tarde reitor do seminário. Dirigiu o boletim da diocese, colaborou assiduamente nos jornais A União e A Pátria, sendo uma figura de destaque na vida social angrense nos anos 1930/40. Nomeado bispo de Cochim em 1941 e mais tarde arcebispo de Goa e Damão, Patriarca das Índias, Primaz do Oriente, foi o último prelado português a ocupar estes cargos. Estava em Pangim quando a União Indiana anexou os territórios de Goa, Damão e Diu em Dezembro de 1961, tendo desempenhado um importante papel junto do general Vassalo e Silva no sentido da rendição das tropas portuguesas. Manteve-se na sua diocese até Setembro de 1962 mas, para facilitar a nomeação de um bispo goês, deixou Pangim. Voltou aos Açores no início do ano seguinte e viveu em Santa Luzia de uma forma modesta, retirada mas muito próxima da população. Manteve os seus títulos de arcebispo e Patriarca das Índias até à assinatura do Tratado de 31 de dezembro de 1974 entre Portugal e a União Indiana. |
