Description
English: Elisabeth Christine of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel (1691-1750) with her daughters Maria Theresa of Austria (1717-1780) and Archduchess Maria Anna of Austria (1718-1744)
description

"In October 2022, we discovered this very interesting group portrait in the online catalogue of an upcoming sale in one of the German auction houses, showing the Empress Consort of the Holy Roman Empire, born Duchess of Brunswick-Wolfenbuettel, Elisabeth Christine (CLICK HERE), with two little daughters (they look like 3-5 and 4-6 years old respectively) - Archduchess Maria Anna (1718-1744; CLICK HERE) and Archduchess (future Empress) Maria Theresa (1717-1780; CLICK HERE).

The fact that Elisabeth Christine is depicted here only with these two surviving children immediately suggested that we are in the period between 1721 and 1723 - in 1724, the Empress became the mother of another girl: Maria Amalia (1724-1730).

We managed to acquire this rather large (18.2cm x 13.4cm) miniature on vellum, and when we held it in our hands, we found the artist's signature in the lower right corner (not mentioned by the auctioneer!) along with the date: "…ad viv. 1722 / …Fischer".

While studying this portrait, we soon came across a mention on the internet of it being sold at Christie's in London in 1980 (see our image nr. 11, pay special attention to the part highlighted in green). We also learned that in October 2020 at the Viennese auction house "Dorotheum" an author's own replica of our miniature was offered, but slightly smaller (13.3cm x 10.5cm) and made not on vellum (like ours), but on ivory (see image nr. 12).

Both versions - ours and the one in the "Dorotheum" - are works of a German miniaturist who worked at the Viennese Imperial Court since the late 1710s, Josef Anton Fischer (? Augsburg - 1750 Vienna; see image nr. 18 with his biography). Our images nr. 13-17 show several other works of this artist, executed in Vienna.
