Description
Deutsch: Scheiger Josef von, Kulturhistoriker und Postbeamter. * Wien, 2. 2. 1801; † Graz, 6. 5. 1886. Sohn eines Juweliers, ab 1861 2. Gatte der Fachschriftstellerin Katharina Pratobevera; stud. an der Univ. Wien Jus (bis 1823), war 1820 wegen burschenschaftlicher Betätigung in Untersuchungshaft. 1824–27 bei der Stiftsherrschaft Schotten in Wien tätig, zuletzt als Stiftsrichter, trat dann als Konzeptspraktikant in die Fahrpostdion. in Wien ein; 1835–39 Oberpostverwalter in Zara (Zadar), 1839–45 Adjunkt der Postdion. in Venedig, 1845–50 Oberpostverwalter, 1850 Postdir. von Graz. 1867 i. R. Erste literar. Versuche (1819) brachten S. in Verbindung u. a. zu Hormayr (s. d.), in dessen „Archiv . . . “ er eine Reihe von kulturhist. Arbeiten veröffentliche. Früh wandte er sich der archäolog. Topographie, insbes. der Burgenarchäologie zu, als deren Begründer in Österreich er anzusehen ist. Auf zahlreichen Fußreisen, bes. in NÖ, schuf er sich eine umfangreiche Sammlung topographisch getreuer Aufnahmen von Wehrbauten, auf deren Grundlage er eine Reihe von Arbeiten verfaßte.
