Joseph S. Bartley, State Treasurer, was born October 28, 1858, in Dearborn County, Indiana. He was raised on a farm, receiving a public school education, and afterwards went to Kankakee, Illinois, from which place he moved to Holt County, Nebraska, in 1880, where he and his wife braved the hardships of frontier life on a homestead, engaging in farming and stock raising, which in those years paid very well. In 1884 he moved to Atkinson, Holt County, and engaged in banking, and while engaged in that business in 1892 he was elected State Treasurer, on the Republican ticket, and was reelected in 1894, so that he is now serving his second term. Mr. Bartley was deservedly one of the most popular citizens of Holt County, and, in fact, of all that part of the State. His name was a synonym for fair dealing. He has filled the office of State Treasurer with fidelity and ability. The responsibility is great, as everyone knows, the bond being $3,000,000. His present term will expire in January, 1897.
