Description

Fighting for Mexican American Rights

A military commander in the Mexican state of Tamaulipas, Cortina also had strong ties to South Texas. He took up arms against Confederate leaders who he saw as oppressors of Mexican Americans along the Rio Grande. Though defeated in the battle at Carrizo, in Zapata County Texas, Cortina continued to support

the Union cause from Mexico.
