Summary[edit]

Description
English: Parvati (ten-armed) nursing Ganesha. Digitized Kalighat painting from 19th century Calcutta, created as inexpensive souvenirs for Hindu pilgrims visiting the famous temple of Kali; The paintings are bound in a single volume, which includes eight hand-coloured woodcut prints (ff. 29-36). They were acquired by Sir Monier Monier-Williams for the Indian Institute Library and Museum at Oxford as a result of his third fund-raising trip to India in the winter of 1883-1884. During this trip, he secured the help of various regional authorities in obtaining local art and craft work and sending them to Oxford. The Kalighat paintings and prints are listed in Babu T.N. Mukherji's "List of Articles collected for the Oxford Institute under the instruction of T.W. Holderness Esq. and Dr. George Watt," Calcutta, 1884, which is bound in the "Original Lists" MS volume held in the Department of Eastern Art, Ashmolean Museum. Shelfmark: MS. Ind. Inst. Misc. 21 [Arch. O. a. 7]
