English: In 1879, Dr. Leslie Keeley, a Civil War surgeon, announced a cure for alcoholism, opium habits and other addictions. He opened over 200 sanatoriums in the United States and Europe. During their month-long stays, patients received regular injections of gold chloride and engaged in group therapy.
