Summary
[edit]DescriptionKenmore United Methodist Church, Kenmore, New York - 20220604.jpg |
English: Kenmore United Methodist Church, 32 Landers Road at Delaware Road, Kenmore, New York, June 2022. This 1928-vintage stone church is a work of the architectural firm of North & Shelgren, who here conceived an English Gothic Revival design very much in keeping with the fashion of the era: the enormous stained-glass window dominating the façade (unusually narrow in this case), L-shaped footprint, preponderance of pointed arches, spireless tower with crenellated parapet, and simplified decor are all typical of the aesthetic. Among the first religious congregations to be organized in this earliest suburb of Buffalo, Kenmore Methodist traces its history back to February 1891, when early village residents Myron and Dulcena Phelps, with the approval of the Superintendent of Church Missions in the neighboring city of Buffalo, began holding Sunday school classes and prayer meetings at their home on the corner of Delaware and Tremaine Avenues. These weekly meetings bounced around a succession of different congregants' homes and rented spaces until the construction of the congregation's first purpose-built church, a now-demolished work of architect Cyrus K. Porter that was built in 1893 and served its purpose until the construction of the present building. Although eyebrows were raised at the congregation's purchase of a site on what was then the far northern outskirts of Kenmore's built-up area, their anticipation of continued growth and expansion proved correct; the church was expanded and/or remodeled repeatedly over the ensuing decades (notably in 1951, 1959, and 2008) to accommodate this. |
