Title |
Chain of the Guild of Saint Hubert |
|||||||||||||||||||||||
Description |
Chain of one of the guilds of Saint Hubert (probably the one in The Hague), guilded and partly enameled. Ten chains are modelled after a double cross in between a pair of stag antlers (the symbol of Saint Hubert). These chains alternate with ten others, representing the letters S and H (the saint's initials). One of these contains the engraved inscription ‘PIRNEYS JACOB ZOE[N]’ (Pirneys Jacobs), possibly the chain's maker. On the front five pairs of coats of arms, each within a pair of stag antlers; one of these is enameled and contains the inscription ‘I Dorp 1581’ on its back. The inscription on the back of another coat of arms reads ‘de Glarges 1580’. The first two represent the families Van Sweieten and Blois (the latter bearing the inscription ‘J. Comes-Invidia’); both are larger and include helm, crest and mantling. The others can't be identified (mainly because of their inaccurate representation). Final chain: a pair of large stag antlers surrounding the coat of arms of Arend van Dorp with helm, crest and mantling; underneath, hanging on two chains, a stag in an enclosure, resembling a Dutch Garden, outside of which two menacing hounds. |
