| Description |
Sunset Key is about 1,500 ft (450 m) from the pier in Key West. It is an artificial island, created from material dredged from Key West harbor, beginning in 1965. It was originally named Tank Island, and was intended for U.S. Navy fuel storage tanks. The island was sold to a builder, and renamed. This is how Sunset Key looked in 1996. Work had begun on an expensive residential and resort community. It was much different the next time we saw it, in 2000. |
