Typed document, black text on white paper.

Gettysburg National Military Park Gettysburg, Pennsylvania April 3, 1963 Mr. George W. Hill, Director Texas State Historical Survey Committee and Texas Civil War Centennial Commission 112 East 18th Street Austin, Texas Dear Mr. Hill: We have been most interested to receive your letter of March 28, 1963, addressed to the previous Superintendent, Mr. James B. Myers. The intention of your Commission to place a Texas marker on the battlefield is most appropriate. We are wondering if you are aware that a small Texas marker now exists on the battlefield with inscription beginning “Hood’s Texas Brigade.” This is a small column, perhaps 7’ high, with rather small and inconspicuous carving of lettering which stands about in the center of the site of the Texas troop front. Presumably, the new memorial which you are proposing will be placed in this immediate vicinity, but since the Texas front was rather short, the area suitable for placing the new memorial is limited and the existence of the present Texas column complicates the matter. We believe, however, that the complications can be worked out and that a very presentable site can be designated. A sketch map of the portion of the Park where the Texas troops were stationed is enclosed, showing the approximate suggested location for your new memorial in the vicinity of the existing memorial. It would be well if a representative of your Committee could visit here to examine the site on the ground and make any necessary decisions as to exact placement. In answer to your query about monumental firms here which could help you in placing your memorial, we submit the following firm names and addresses: Gettysburg Monumental Words, 5 Delap Avenue, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, and Codori and Miller Memorials, Rear 46 York Street, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. We will be interested to see the inscription which you are proposing for the memorial and will send you our comments on it promptly. If we can be of further assistance, do not hesitate to write. We look forward to a successful construction of this memorial to the Texans. Sincerely yours, Kittridge A. Wing Superintendent Enclosure – P.S. Photo of Texas column is enclosed.
