Mrs. Robert Hamilton Smith P.O. Box 4375 Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 19118 Dear Mrs. Smith: Thank you for your gracious letter of the 12th. It was very much a pleasure for me to help with arrangements for the great day, August 25, and I look forward to the occasion – so long as I don’t have to make any speeches! We will prepare some 14 pipe sockets in the ground around the memorial, to take 1 1/8” flagstaffs. These will position the butt of the staff at ground level, unless you believe a different level is necessary. We will also have a U.S. flag for the hotel and another for the stand outdoors. I am told by my colleagues in Washington that I can borrow a stand 16’ x 24’, about 2 ft. high, with railings, stairs, and bunting. This is thought to be about right for 30 people. We are also planning to borrow 400 chairs. Mr. DeLue telephoned me yesterday to say that he is beginning arrangements to get the foundation in, and that he will come down himself to oversee the next steps, sometime in August.
