Memorandum To: Regional Director, Northeast Region From: Superintendent, Gettysburg Subject: Correspondence with Mrs. Kibler re Confederate Memorial You will remember that at the time of our conference in your office on December 18th, we decided that I should write Mrs. Forrest Kibler regarding preparations for placing a new Confederate monument here. Herewith is a copy of my letter to her of December 24, and a typed copy of her longhand reply dated December 3rd. You may wish to send her a reply; my own reply is still under consideration. Much as I sympathize with Mrs. Kibler’s difficulty, it is obviously impossible for us to reject the DeLue design unless it is grossly inappropriate- and we have not yet seen a sketch of it. It will surprise me greatly if we find any reason for rejection of it. As you pointed out, it may very possibly be superior to the Harris statue! I will write Mrs. Kibler before the end of this month, advising her to work through her committee for a final determination and submission of a design, etc. If you have any thoughts you would like to have me include, please advise.
