Summary[edit]
DescriptionL'Union Saint-Jean-Baptiste d'Amerique.svg |
English: The emblem of the Saint-Jean-Baptiste Society of America or L'Union Saint-Jean-Baptiste d'Amérique, a society to promote the culture and social wellbeing of Francophones in the United States in the early 20th century, being founded by the similarly named independent Saint-Jean-Baptiste Society of Holyoke, Mass., when its membership felt the need to create a national American society of the French-speaking peoples. The first meeting was held in Holyoke on Feb. 26, 1899, and the first convention of delegates was held in Woonsocket, Rhode Island on March 27, 1900, where the organization would set up its headquarters.
The emblem depicts the American and French flags to either side of a cross which obscures the Carillon-Sacré-Coeur (lit. Flag of the Sacred Heart) used by French Québecois Catholics. The green maple leaves are a motif common with earlier Canadian Saint-Jean-Baptiste Society flags as well as in the coat of arms of Montreal. The motto reads L'union fait la force translating to "unity is strength". |
