Description

La place, à gauche sur la photo, est le lieu où le commandant Passot a pris possession de Mayotte le 14 juin 1843. Une stèle, qui a été détruite il y a quelques années lors de travaux de voirie, commémorait cet évènement historique pour les Mahorais.

L'île avait été achetée au sultan Andriantsouly par le gouvernement français le 25 avril 1841 contre une rente annuelle et viagère de 1.000 piastres.

L'hôtel du Rocher est installé sur l'emplacement de l'ancienne sous-préfecture à proximité de l'embarcadère. A l'arrière, se trouve l'ancien bâtiment des messageries maritimes.
