| Description |
Deutsch: Auf dem Rathausplatz, der vor den Zerstörungen im und nach dem zweiten Weltkrieg das Marienviertel und damit das historische Zentrum der Stadt Berlin bildete. Die Umgebungssituation änderte sich dabei völlig, vorher existierte hier ein dicht bebautes Altstadtgebiet. Die recht große Kirche wirkt heute auf dem Platz regelrecht verloren. Dass sie noch steht, soll daran liegen, dass sich die alliierten Flugzeugführer bei Bombenangriffen an diesem Bauwerk orientierten. Nach dem Krieg war sie die letzte noch nutzbare Großkirche der Stadt. Auch in den Sechzigern entging das Gebäude dem Abbruch. Gut möglich, dass Verantwortlichen in der DDR keinen Konflikt mit der Landeskirche riskieren wollten. |
