Description

Autour de la statue de Proserpine, fille de Cérès et divinité des saisons, alternent, sur la balustrade de la terrasse, des pommes de pin (symboles de mort) et des glands (symboles de renaissance de la nature et de la prospérité) Au fond, deux ours portent les armes du prince Orsini, le commanditaire du jardin.

Le parc des Monstres (appelé aussi Bois sacré ou Villa des Merveilles) a été conçu par le grand architecte Pirro Ligorio en 1552 à la demande du prince Vicino Orsini, le seigneur de Bomarzo.

Il est situé au pied du mont Cimino (dans le Latium, à une vingtaine de kilomètres de Viterbe) dans un vallon parcouru par un torrent.

Le parc a inspiré de nombreux artistes, notamment surréalistes mais également Niki de Saint Phalle qui a réalisé son Jardin des Tarots à moins de cent kilomètres de distance.
