Description

La sculpture représente un corps symbolisant les luttes entre les grandes idéologies du XXè siècle : le communisme (poing levé), le fascisme (bras tendu)


Le bâtiment d'origine a été construit au centre de la ville historique de Potsdam à la demande de Frédéric le Grand en 1771-1772 sur un modèle baroque italien adapté par l'architecte Carl von Gontard. Deux ailes ont été ajoutées au palais au milieu du XIXè siècle. Au cours des années, le bâtiment a hébergé des expositions d'art, une bibliothèque, des concerts, un cinéma.

Il a été largement détruit en avril 1945 lors d'un bombardement. Les ruines ont été démolies en 1948 et l'espace est resté vide.

En 2005, la ville a décidé la reconstruction du bâtiment avec des façades identiques à l'original (architectes : Hilmer & Sattler et Albrecht). Le financement a été assuré par la fondation Hasso Plattner. Les locaux ont été aménagés pour y accueillir un musée moderne et une partie de la collection du mécène allemand Hasso Plattner.
