Laconia Building (German Bank of Wheeling), Market Street and 12th Street, Wheeling, WV

Summary[edit]

Description
English: Built circa 1877 as a Gothic Revival-style building, known as Washington Hall or the Grand Opera House, the building was sold to the German Bank of Wheeling in 1896. The bank founded in 1870, occupied the building for 15 years before carrying out a major renovation in 1911, under the direction of architect Frederick Faris, which added the current white granite exterior, two additional floors, and the Classical Revival exterior facade. The bank became known as the Wheeling Bank and Trust Company in 1918, due to anti-German hysteria during World War I. The bank later merged with the Dollar Savings and Trust to form the Wheeling Dollar Savings and Trust Company in 1933. The building features a white granite exterior, large corinthian pilasters at the third through sixth floors, a cornice with modillions and egg and dart motif, one-over-one windows, a chamfered corner, decorative trim, and large bays at the ground floor with retail shopfronts. The building is a contributing structure in the Wheeling Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. The building is presently known as the Laconia Building, known for its primary tenant, and additionally houses the Wheeling Moose Lodge.
