Summary[edit]

Description

Here is a one minute video I made while the guest of a lake-front community of large, colorful paper wasps (Polistes major) last month at the P.B. County SWA Greenway Trail. They let me watch as they lovingly cared for their young. I would have documented more of their fascinating behavior but my potato head was directly in their flyway!

There is a LOT going on in this short video, especially starting around 00:24.

00:00-The alert fighters are eying me carefully as they didn't get the memo that I was invited. 00:24-two wasps up front are working together to divide a caterpillar for feeding to the young while another fans her wings to cool eggs facing the sun. 00:45-two scouts return (having dodged around my head). 00:55 more fanning/cooling. This colony was on the shore of a beautiful pond under a sign which barely provided any cover at all so dealing with thunderstorms must have been difficult. The unique music used is an excerpt, The complete track is here: soundcloud.com/venenoparalashadas/arogardam-demo

(I primarily use music to cover ambient man-made sound, like cars & helicopters.)
