Summary[edit]

Description
English: Page of Les aéronauts du siège, an article series on the French balloonists during the Siege of Paris 1870–71, published in Le Monde illustré 1909; here about the record-breaking 'Ville de´Orleans' balloon flight, one of the 66 balloons that escaped Paris during the Franco-Prussian War. Piloted by Paul Rolier (1844–1929) and Leon Bezier (1840–97), the balloon departed on 24 November 1870. It was blown off course and eventually landed in Norway nearly 15 hours later, after a record-breaking journey of more than 1200 kilometres. Cropped version of a scanned image from the archives at Gallica.bnf.fr. Public domain.
