Description

L'Ara Pacis est conservé dans un bâtiment conçu par l'architecte américain Richard Meyer

Inauguré en 2006, ce bâtiment, proche du mausolée d'Auguste, protège l'autel de la Paix d'Auguste (Ara Pacis Augustae) datant de l'an 9 avant J.-C. Cet autel célèbre les victoires d'Auguste en Espagne, en Gaule et la pacification de l'Empire romain. A l'origine, il était à 200 m de sa position actuelle où il a été reconstitué à l'époque musolinienne.

Ce sont ses bas-reliefs (décoration florale, frise de personnages en procession et divinités tutélaires) qui en ont fait la célébrité.
