Summary[edit]

Description

Town Hall, Leeds, West Yorkshire, England. Designed by Cuthbert Brodrick, built 1853-1858. The tympanum of the front door was sculpted by Thomas of London. The exterior of the building has a number of architectural carvings by Robert and Catherine Mawer, although Catherine was credited with the work by 1858. The heads were described as masks in the 1850s, but some of them represent various ancient Greek mythological characters, and are also portraits of contemporary people.

This is Dionysus (Bacchus) crowned with vine leaves. The Mawer Group of sculptors normally worked in Anglican churches, where grape vines represented the hidden fruits of heaven. So this ambiguous Dionysus looks upwards to his vine leaves and future fruits, and his eyes are unfocused because he is drunk.
