At the highest level, an Ionic frieze decorated with stucco reliefs is preserved in fragments. Above the frieze, six small Ionic half-columns (height 1.46 m.), flanked by two antae at the ends, form the second storey. The spaces between the half-columns take the form of false door-leaves, imitating real door-leaves which were made of wood and decorated with bronze nails. The Ionic frieze depicts a clash between cavalrymen and infantry men in pairs (a cavalryman and an infantryman, two cavalrymen, two hoplites). The nationalities of the warriors are distinguished by their different dress: Greeks against barbarians or Macedonians against Persians. The Greeks are distinguished by their cloaks, which billow in the wind and hardly cover their bodies, and by their cuirasses and shields; the barbarian Persians, in contrast, are indicated by their colored trousers (anaxyrides), the tiara on their head (a kind of hood) and their shields. The eleven metopes of the Doric cornice are decorated with scenes from the mythical battle between the Centaurs and the Lapiths. The painted figures resemble drawings rather than fully painted portrayals. The surfaces of the figures are covered by a golden tint.
