Summary[edit]

Description

Lepisosteus atrox Leidy, 1873 - fossil fish (real) from the Eocene of Wyoming, USA. (UW 16435, University of Wyoming Museum, Laramie, Wyoming, USA)

From museum signage:

Colossal Gar It's a big fish. In fact, it's the biggest fish ever collected from the famous Green River fossil beds near Kemmerer, Wyoming. This giant 55-million-year-old alligator gar probably ambushed ducks for lunch! Gars lived with dinosaurs during the Cretaceous Period and they still swim in rivers throughout the Midwest today. And they still have needle-sharp teeth.
