Description

In 1978 New Zealand band Split Enz were in the UK attempting to record their new album. Things were not going so well as the band had been dropped by their record label Chrysalis, they had no manager in the UK and not a bean to live on. Tim Finn applied to the Queen Elizabeth II Arts Council for funding to help the band in this difficult time. From the file we have here at Archives New Zealand relating to the application, the Arts Council granted Split Enz $5000NZD in their time of need. Correspondence within the file notes Tim Finn’s steely determination to prove the record company wrong and show they were in fact a good investment.

Shown here is a letter from Tim Finn to the Queen Elizabeth II Arts Council of New Zealand, tanking them for their support.

The file in which this correspondence is found is open access and can be consulted in our Wellington Office reading room.
