Summary[edit]

Description

On 7 June 1917 Lieutenant Alan Hurst Preston 10/910 (also known as Allan Henry Preston) was killed in action at Messines while trying to secure positions of safety and establish gun positions.

He was awarded a Military Cross in 1916. According to the medal citation published in the London Gazette on 14 November 1916, “He handled his machine-guns under heavy fire with great courage and ability. He set a fine example to his men, and greatly assisted the final success of the operation.” He was also mentioned in despatches in 1915.

The photograph above comes from a series created by the National Museum. The Museum endeavoured to obtain a portrait of each New Zealander who had received a gallantry medal during the First World War. Families sent in photographic portraits which were eventually mounted onto board and exhibited.
