Summary[edit]
DescriptionLife Cycle of Corals.svg |
English: 1. Sperm-egg clusters are released by polyps from colonies reef-wide.
2. Gamete clusters float up to the surface of the ocean. 3. Clusters break up at the surface, followed by inter-colony gamete mixing and fertilization. 4. Embryos become ciliated planula larvae, they are capable of settlement for up to 3-4 weeks. 5. The larva settles and undergoes metamorphosis. 6. The juvenile polyp develops a mouth and tentacles. 7. Zooxanthellae are incorporated, calcification is increased, and budding happens at the base of the polyp to start a new colony. 8. The colony continues to expand through calcification and extra tentacular budding. |
