(a) dinoflagellates tend to utilize a haplontic life cycle, (b) diatoms tend to utilize a diplontic life cycle, and (c) coccolithophores tend to utilize a haplo-diplontic life cycle. Note that not all coccolithophores calcify in their haploid phase.
