Summary[edit]

Description
English: Monolayer culture of human corneal limbal epithelial cells. This is a BSE-image of a lanthanoid-stained sample taken with EVO LS10 scanning electron microscope (Zeiss, Germany) without prior fixation, nor dehydration, nor sputtering (a method developed by BioREE, Russia, with support from the Research Institute of Eye Diseases, Russia). Nuclei, nucleoli, and extracellular matrix components are clearly visible. Cell borders, intercellular contacts in particular, are very bright because of having taken up the rare earth based contrast agent. One can say that a sample thus prepared resembles a block of ice with air bubbles in it – the deeper an object lies, the lower contrast it has and the more diffused it appears. Coauthors: A.M. Subbot, A.I. Bursov
