Description

Limestone breccia with gypsum in the Mississippian of Kentucky, USA.

This is a limestone wall in Rose's Pass in western Kentucky's Mammoth Cave, the longest cave on Earth. The system has 412 mapped miles, as of fall 2017.

The limestone has been brecciated with gypsum filling the spaces between clasts. Brecciation was likely caused by gypsum wedging. In the Flint Ridge portion of the system, gypsum wedging is a significant physical process that causes detachment of relatively thin slabs of rock from cave passage ceilings.
