| Description | The Monument to the Discoveries is in Belem, by the Tagus (Tejo) River. Prince Henry the Navigator (1394-1460) is the large figure. There are 30 other famous Portuguese from that ara behind him. Many are connected with seafaring and exploration, including Vasco da Gama and Ferdinand Magellan. The monument was constructed for a World's Fair in Lisbon in 1940 as a temporary ornament. (That fair has been called a "colonial exposition,) The monument was rebuilt in concrete in 1960. |
