English: Llandrindod station (1982). Looking North towards Shrewsbury. A similar view to 198716.
At the time of this photo, and since the Beeching review of 1964, only one platform is in use (the down platform) as the line was single through the station. Trains had to cross on a short section of double track approximately half a mile away by the signal box, which also controlled a level crossing. This arrangement was a great cause of complaint and inconvenience for passengers on Southbound trains (as in the photo) when the Northbound train was running late as they had to wait outside the station, unable to get off, until the other train had arrived. (Apologies for the lines drawn on the photo- these mark the position of the two trains, the northbound train now in the distance by the signal box. This photograph was previously used in my 'O' level geography project!) |
