Summary[edit]

Description
English: Lombard cancellus plaque, Santa Maria la Rossa
  • Milan, Province of Milan, Region Lombardy, Italy

This cancellus plaque was found in the immediate vicinity of Milan in the church Santa Maria la Rossa, documented since the year 988. Here the plaque had found a second usage as a tomb plaque. The sanctuary in which it originally stood was constructed over various phases from the 6th into the 8th centuries and was integrated into the imposing reception area of a late antique villa. In the middle of the pictorial field is a triumphal cross. Oriented symmetrically in mirror images facing the center of the cross two lambs beneath the cross beam and two doves above it. This motif, widespread from early Christian times, continued to enjoy great popularity in Italy during the period of Lombard rule.

  • Photographed while on display from 22 August 2008 to 11 January 2009 in the exhibition "Die Langobarden. Das Ende der Völkerwanderung" at the Rheinisches LandesMuseum Bonn. On loan from the Sopritendenza per i Beni Archeologici della Lombardia, Milan.
Deutsch: Langobardische Schrankenplatte, Santa Maria la Rossa
  • Mailand, Provinz Milano, Region Lombardia, Italien
