Title |
English: Looking southwest toward the First Hill neighborhood, showing Providence Hospital and Central School in the background, Seattle, ca. 1885 |

Description |
English: Providence Hospital was located at 5th Ave. between Madison St. and Spring St.; Central School was located between Madison St. and Marion St., 6th Ave. and 7th Ave . Central School was built in 1883 and destroyed in the fire of 1889 (information from Seattle Photograph Collection, negative number UW5041) [but see note below]. Handwritten on verso: Providence Hosp., Central School in background . Warner 381x
Despite what the University of Libraries record says, the 1883 Central School was not "destroyed in the fire of 1889": it burned in April 1888. Someone was probably confused by the fact that Brown's Pavilion on the northwest corner of 2nd Avenue and Spring Street, which functioned as the Central School after that fire did, indeed burn the Seattle Fire of 1889. See Seattle Public Schools, 1862-2000: Central School II, HistoryLink.org Essay 10482. |
