Summary[edit]

Description

On this day 24 September 1945 a Royal New Zealand Air Force plane was lost enroute to New Zealand from Vanuatu, with 20 RNZAF personnel on board.

The Douglas Dakota C-47 (DC3) plane had left Espiritu Santo on the morning of Tuesday 24th with four crew and 16 passengers on board. Their last communication was with Norfolk Island at 10.08 am when the captain called for a direction finding bearing. The subsequent search involved 16 planes from New Zealand, Norfolk Island, New Caledonia and Vanuatu which combed the ocean and land. As the families of the 20 missing men waited anxiously, the search continued but no trace of the plane was found. Amid the myriad of technical search data in the official file on the crash there is one discordant note, a letter from an anonymous psychic who claimed there had been one survivor who had appeared in a vision standing in a barren place wearing a green patterned shirt. This letter was referred to the Ministry of Defence, without comment from search officials.

At the time of this disaster there were some 4000 RNZAF personnel in the Pacific waiting to be evacuated after demobilisation at the end of the Second World War. The RNZAF found itself having to defend the safety record of DC3 planes as families worried that the same fate would befall their loved ones returning from war. The Chief of Air Staff advised the Minister of defence that to return the personnel by ship would delay the return of personnel for many months.

Shown here is a telegram instructing on the search strategy to be followed on the first day of the search.
