Summary[edit]

Description

At the right and in the distance is Fortress Louisbourg. In the waters are the remains of a number of French navy vessels destroyed by the British during the attacks on the Fortress. In the harbour and surrounding areas are at least 26 wrecks from 1713-1758. The most famous ships are the Prudent and Entreprenant each carrying 74 guns, as well as Capricieux and Celebre with 64 guns each. The Celebre was built in Brest in 1755 and is in the best condition. It is possible to dive on these wrecks but with many regulations in place to protect them. Main dive site is the Celebre, a French 64 gun ship, sank by the British during the invasion. The wooden remains of the ship are in 8 meters (25 feet) of water. Many of the cannons and other parts of the Celebre shipwreck are still clearly visible.

The lighthouse constructed by the French in 1730 at Louisbourg was the first one established in Canada, and the second on the North American continent. To the left of the lighthouse are the remains of the first lighthouse built here. This is the third lighthouse built at this site. It was built in 1923, a year after the second light was destroyed by fire.
