Summary[edit]

Description

Low cost urine diverting dehydrating toilet with mud mortar in the superstructure and ferrocement covers.

Technology: This is a low-cost demonstration toilet that has been built at the composting facility. It is built as a urine diverting double vault ecosan toilet with mud mortar in the superstructure and ferrocement covers. It has been constructed in the course of a training for masons about ecosan toilets.

Capacity: The toilet is meant to serve one family of about 5.

Investment Costs: UGX 600 000.- for the model depicted in the figures. The figure includes the plastic squatting pans and the urine piping that is provided for free by the Town Council.

Operation: The toilet is meant for home use. The depicted toilet is used and operated by the staff of the composting facility. Instructions about the proper utilization of the toilet are available from the Town Council.

Benefits: •Hygienization and safe disposal of human waste •Low cost •Little smell, few flies •Does not affect the groundwater •Not affected by a high groundwater table •Does not collapse •Utilization of both liquids and solids as fertilizer products

Environmental threats: If used correctly, none.

Problems encountered: The toilet is still too expensive to be affordable to the very poor. A demonstration toilet with further reduced costs of construction is planned for a future training of masons.

With regards to operation, the toilet has so far been working well.
