Summary[edit]
DescriptionM&T Bank Kenmore Branch - former First National Bank of Kenmore - Kenmore, New York - 20220331.jpg |
English: As seen in March 2022, the Kenmore Branch of M&T Bank stands at 2882 Delaware Avenue (corner Lincoln Boulevard) in the central business district of Kenmore, New York. Here we see a fine example of the so-called "stripped Classical" architecture that was so common in bank buildings in the early 20th century, where Greco-Roman motifs are simplified and streamlined in accordance with the principles of the fast-emerging Modernism. The deeply recessed front entrance is framed by a pair of Doric columns that are echoed on the side elevations by pilaster strips intercalated between a row of enormous, floor-to-ceiling windows. The third floor is sandwiched between a frieze below and a dentil row above. The flat roofline is accented by a low triangular parapet suggestive of a Classical pediment. The interior was originally finished in marble wainscoting accented with mahogany, and consisted of a banking floor at ground level, a mezzanine above where the executive offices were found, and rented offices on the upper floors. The building was erected as headquarters of the First National Bank of Kenmore, plans for which were announced in December 1924 by Matthew D. Young, president of the then two-year-old financial institution. The $300,000 construction process began the following year and was completed in March 1926. In 1945, the First National Bank was acquired by the Manufacturers & Traders Trust Company of Buffalo, who has operated the facility as their Kenmore Branch ever since. |
