English: An emergency locator beacon. It is carried by personnel going into wilderness areas. If they become lost it transmits a radio signal which can be used to find them. The beacon includes a GPS receiver, so the transmitted signal includes its location in latitude and longitude. It transmits on Marine and Airband at 121.5 MHz, and satellite band at 406.0 MHz for reception by an emergency locator satellite.

[edit]Une radiobalise a une puissance comprise entre 3 W et 7 W sur la bande 406 à 406,1 MHz en transmission digital codé du MMSI d'une durée de 440 ms tous les 50 s. Une radiobalise a une puissance comprise entre 25 mW et 100 mW sur 121,500 MHz. La Modulation d'amplitude émise sur cette fréquence correspond à un balayage de plus de 700 Hz entre 300 Hz et 1 600 Hz.
Sur les navires. La radiobalise de localisation de sinistre est placée dans les parties hautes du navire, dans un conteneur muni d'un largueur hydrostatique conçu pour la libérer automatiquement par détection de pression équivalente à une immersion à une profondeur de 3 à 4 mètres lorsque le navire coule. Sur les aéronefs. La radiobalise peut se mettre automatiquement en fonctionnement suite à un violent choc. Elles peuvent aussi être mises en marche manuellement.
Depuis 1er février 2009, les satellites Cospas-Sarsat ne localisent plus les émissions sur les fréquences : 121,500 MHz et 243 MHz.
Les radiobalises de bord sont aussi désignées par le terme ELT (Emergency Locator Transmitters). Elles émettent sur :
- La bande 406 à 406,1 MHz, pour la signalisation et le répérage par satellite Cospas-Sarsat ;
- La bande 406 à 406,1 MHz et 121,500 MHz;
- 243,000 MHz, version militaire.
- L'émission sur les fréquences 121,500 MHz, 243,000 MHz, nécessite un repérage radiogoniométrique par les équipes de recherche au sol.
