English: CASTLE ORIGINALLY BUILT IN 9TH C AS A DEFENSE TOWER AGAINST THE VIKINGS. AROUND 1168 TO 1191 THE WOODEN CASTLE WAS REPLACED BY STONE BY THE COUNTS OF FLANDERS. IT WAS BURNT IN 1473 AND REBUILT AS THE CURRENT STRUCTURE. IT PASSED IN TO SPANISH HANDS AND WAS SOLD IN 1558 BY PHILIP II; IT WAS OCCUPIED BY GERMAN TROOPS IN BOTH BOTH WORLD WARS; IT HAS BEEN RESTORED AS A CONVENT IN 1954 |
