English: Imperial Roman Arm A siege tower and a battering ram Imperial Roman Army
The battering ram was a heavy iron ram's head (simplified in this model) fixed to a massive beam which was repeatedly slung against a wall or gate until it was breached. There was also a beam with an iron hook which was inserted into holes in the wall made by the ram and with which stones would be pulled out (the corvo In English crow).A smaller iron point the terebus was used for dislodging individual stones. The beam and frame from which the ram was swung were enclosed in a shed covered with hides or iron plates, mounted on wheels. This was the tortoise, testudo arietaria, since it had a heavy shell and a head that moved in and out. The ram Was also protected by the solders in the siege tower.
