Summary[edit]

Description
English: These rocks are part of the Cadillac Mountain Granite, a large granitic pluton that crystallized about 419 to 424 million years ago, at Silurian-Devonian boundary times [a 365 Ma date has also been published]. The granite body represents the cooled magma chamber beneath a large, ancient volcano.

The band going through the granite is a mafic dike. Igneous dikes are planar intrusions that cut across country rocks. They can be thin or thick and can be oriented vertically or not. Common dike compositions are felsic (granite) and mafic (basalt/diabase).

Locality: summit of South Bubble, Acadia National Park, Mt. Desert Island, southern-coastal Maine, USA
