Summary

[edit]
Description Trade, commerce and being a major commerce and shipping hub apart, Cebu is also famous for being the spot where Datu Lapu Lapu, a local warrior, despatched the famed Ferdinand Magellan, an aggressive Portuguese traveler and colonialist. This monument, called Magellan's Marker, was erected in 1866 to mark the spot where Magellan died. Of course, Magellan's death in the hands of Datu Lapu Lapu occurred much earlier, in 1521, but this monument was put up only about 350 years later. (Cebu, Philippines, May 2013)
